Beside Still Waters — Psalm 23

A reminder that God does not only lead us forward — He also leads us into rest.

Beside Still Waters was inspired by Psalm 23, where David describes God as a Shepherd who knows exactly what His people need.

He writes:

“He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.”

For sheep, still water matters. Fast-moving water can be frightening and difficult to drink from, so a good shepherd leads the flock somewhere calm and safe.

David uses that image to show us something about the character of God.

He does not lead His people carelessly. He knows when we need direction, when we need protection — and when we simply need rest.

Psalm 23 was never a promise that life would always feel peaceful. David knew hardship, uncertainty, grief and fear. Yet in the middle of those realities, he describes a God who brings restoration to the soul.

That is the heart behind Beside Still Waters.

A quiet figure stands within an expansive landscape of calm water, softened hills and open sky. The scene is intentionally understated, allowing the stillness of the landscape to reflect the peace found in the Psalm.
