It Is Finished — The Cross at Calvary | John 19

A reminder that what looked like the darkest moment was also the moment the work was completed.

It Is Finished was inspired by the crucifixion of Jesus and the final words He spoke from the cross in John 19.

Jesus had been arrested, questioned, mocked, beaten and sentenced to death by crucifixion.

He was taken outside Jerusalem to Golgotha — also called the Place of the Skull — where He was nailed to a cross between two others.

For those who loved Him, everything appeared to be falling apart.

The disciples had scattered. His followers watched in grief. The One they believed to be the promised Messiah was suffering the death of a criminal.

And then, near the end, Jesus spoke three words:

“It is finished.”

He did not say, “I am finished.”

He said the work was finished.

For Christians, those words carry the heart of the Gospel.

Throughout Scripture, humanity’s sin created separation from a holy God. Sacrifices had long been offered as a picture of the cost of sin and the need for atonement.

Christians believe Jesus came to do what those sacrifices could never permanently accomplish.

On the cross, He willingly gave His life.

The debt was paid.

The work He came to accomplish was complete.

Later that day, Jesus’ body was placed in a tomb.

To anyone watching, the cross could have looked like defeat.

But three days later, the tomb would be empty.

The crucifixion and resurrection together became the foundation of the Christian hope: sin and death would not have the final word.

That is the heart behind It Is Finished.

Our interpretation keeps the scene intentionally quiet. A solitary cross rests within a vast mountain landscape beneath a softly painted sky. There are no crowds or detailed figures competing for attention. Instead, the simplicity leaves room to sit with the weight of what happened there.

The cross is small within the landscape — but once you notice it, it changes the meaning of the entire scene.

For us, this piece is a reminder for the days when circumstances seem final.

When something looks broken beyond repair.

When hope feels buried.

Calvary reminds us that God can be working even when the story appears to have reached its darkest ending.

The cross was not the end.

And Jesus’ final words were not words of defeat.

It was finished.
