Touching the Hem — The Woman Healed by Jesus | Mark 5
A reminder that Jesus sees the one reaching for Him — even in the middle of the crowd.
Touching the Hem was inspired by the story of a woman who had been suffering for twelve years.
Mark tells us that she had endured a chronic bleeding condition for more than a decade. She had gone to physicians, undergone treatments and spent everything she had looking for relief.
Instead of getting better, she had grown worse.
Her suffering was not only physical. In the culture and religious customs of her time, ongoing bleeding would also have affected how she participated in everyday life and community.
Twelve years is a long time to hope for something to change.
Then she heard about Jesus.
A crowd surrounded Him as He walked, but the woman believed that she did not even need to get His attention.
She thought:
“If I just touch His clothes, I will be healed.”
So she moved through the crowd and reached for the edge of His garment.
Immediately, her bleeding stopped.
But the story did not end there.
Jesus stopped walking.
With people pressing all around Him, He asked who had touched Him. His disciples were confused — everyone was touching Him.
But Jesus knew that this touch was different.
The woman came forward trembling and told Him the truth.
And Jesus did something deeply personal.
He called her:
“Daughter.”
Then He told her that her faith had made her well and sent her away in peace.
After twelve years of illness, disappointment and searching, she was not simply healed.
She was seen.
That is the heart behind Touching the Hem.
Our interpretation places the moment far within an expansive landscape. Jesus and the woman remain intentionally small, softened into the scene with no close facial detail. At first, the piece reads as a quiet biblical landscape. As the story comes into focus, you notice her reaching toward the hem of His robe.
For us, this passage speaks especially to the seasons when faith feels less like confidence and more like reaching.
Reaching when you are tired.
Reaching after disappointment.
Reaching when you do not have all the answers.
The woman had tried everything she knew to try — and still she believed there was enough hope left to move toward Jesus.
Sometimes faith is simply taking that next step toward Him.
