Jesus Leaves the 99 — The Lost Sheep | Matthew 18

A reminder that being lost does not make you forgotten.

Jesus Leaves the 99 was inspired by the parable of the lost sheep — one of the clearest pictures Jesus gave of how deeply God cares for each individual person.

Jesus asked His listeners to imagine a shepherd with one hundred sheep.

If even one wandered away, would the shepherd simply look at the ninety-nine that remained and decide that was good enough?

No.

He would go searching for the one.

The hills could be difficult. The sheep could be far away. The search might take time.

But the shepherd would go.

And when he found that lost sheep, Jesus said the shepherd would rejoice over finding it.

Luke’s account adds another beautiful detail: the shepherd places the sheep on his shoulders, carries it home and invites others to celebrate with him.

The point of the story was never really about livestock.

Jesus was showing us the heart of God.

The person who feels far away still matters.

The person who has wandered is still worth pursuing.

The person who feels unnoticed in a crowd has not disappeared from God’s sight.

And when the lost one is found, the response is not anger.

It is joy.

That is the heart behind Jesus Leaves the 99.

Our interpretation places Jesus and the single sheep far within an expansive landscape beneath a sweeping, softly painted sky. The sky carries most of the composition, allowing the piece to feel peaceful and understated in a home. Then, as the story comes into view, you notice the Shepherd who has gone into the distance for one.

For us, this story speaks to the seasons when we feel disconnected, unsure of where we belong, or convinced we have wandered too far.

The parable gives us a different picture.

God does not shrug at the missing one.

He pursues.

He finds.

And He rejoices.
